BlueXP is now NetApp Console
Monitor and run hybrid cloud data services
(upbeat music) NetApp just announced the technology preview of Snap Mirror active sync. Snap Mirror active sync allows you to have concurrent read and write access to both sides of a Snap Mirror relationship even when they're in different data centers. One of the coolest use cases is with VMware Metro Storage Cluster. So let's take a look at that now. Here's a VMware environment that's set up with VMware Metro Storage Cluster. To protect the storage, we'll use NetApp ONTAP tools for VMware. We'll create the protection relationship with this policy here called Automated Failover Duplex. This creates a SnapMirror active sync relationship between the two sites. We'll set up host proximities to tell ONTAP which hosts are at which site to maximize our performance. Let's check our settings by looking at ONTAP tools for VMware. You can see the storage backends, the capacity available, which virtual machines are on which data stores, whether those data stores have snapshot protection, and whether the ESXI clusters also have protection. You can see the SnapMirror policy here of Automated Failover Duplex indicates that we are using SnapMirror active sync. Let's look at a failover scenario. Here's a VMware environment running VMware Metro Storage Cluster. There are two brand new ASAC series, one at site A and one at site B with SnapMirror active sync replicating between them. One of the virtual machines is running on site A. It has this video running on repeat with two of my favorite people. You can see there's IO on the data store serving this VM at site A. We could non-disruptively, vMotion this VM between site A and site B, but it's more exciting to see a failover scenario. So what we're going to do is disconnect the network connections to the entire storage array at site A. The host is still going to stay up. IO switches over to site B automatically, and you'll see a burst of IO on the storage array on site B as it starts to serve data to the original host. There it is. The video keeps playing with no interruption on the VM itself, and the video picks up right where it left off. The best data protection is invisible, and you've just seen how easy it is to set up SnapMirror active sync with VMware Metro Storage Cluster. That's a complete high availability solution for your VMware environments. SnapMirror active sync is in technology preview now. (upbeat music)
SnapMirror active sync from NetApp delivers synchronous, active-active data replication with concurrent read and write to both sides, even at different locations.
