Monitor and run hybrid cloud data services
[Music]welcome to the top of the cloud i'm ronnie schwartz your host general manager of cloud volumes and with me today is a veryspecial guest at name the general manager of fsx in aws welcome ed thanks ronan pleasure to be herewe're in exciting las vegas in the middle of the show after so long i wanted to uh to start by asking you i always admired aws customer obsession how does customer obsession actually translate intothe fsx service that you are leading yeah well it really starts with the roadmap uh ronin so everything in our roadmap isbased on built on starts with customer feedback customer input that we've gotten it's all about what problems have customers asked us to solve for them and so with fsx for ontap as an example we really started with the customer problem of customers telling us we wanted it to be as easy as possible supereasy to move my applications and my data sets from on-premises to the cloud because more and more customers are moving their applications to the cloud and moving their workloads to the cloud and they need their data with them and most of that data on premises that works with a lot of these applications is file based it's all file systems a lot of is on netapp some of it is on other nas appliances and so customers really wanted a very seamless path to move those file workloads to aws and that's where we partnered with you collaborated with you on the vision and the execution of what has become fsx for netapp ontap and thisfocus on solving the customer problem really led to us building the first complete fully managed ontap in the cloud yeah so first congratulations i think for both of us on something soamazing mynext question um to you isfile and file storage how critical is it for the average customer that is using oh it's absolutely critical um file is just such a core building block for uh so much of what businesses uh do with their technology and there'skind of you can think of two different spaces so the first is what i was talking about you know nas migrations there's so much on-premises data around 100 exabytes of file-based data customers want to move their applications not have to re-architect rewrite their applications for a different storage solution um so you know having a file capability that's very similar to what they have on premises but with all of the capabilities of the cloud the agility the integrations with other services etc reallyimportant second part is customers are increasingly building more and more data intensive and compute intensive workloads on the cloud think about things like machine learning modern high performance computing video transcodingand what customers really need for that is very high performance storage things like really low latencies really high levels of iops really high throughput and they want a storage solution that provides capabilities for doing things with your data at scale so think about things like snapshotting and cloning and locking files and so file storage really is built for those types of data intensive computeintensive applications and it'scritical for them yeah i'm so happy to see that and i definitely hear that repeatedly from customers i also continuously hearing about the need to innovate and innovate faster how does that translate into obviously fsx was a major innovation fsx for a for netapp ontap is a major innovation but how does that innovation translate intothe next step yeah well it comes back to again listening to customers and if you take a look at what we've uh done over the past three years since launching fsx with our existing file systems and now withontapthere's four areas where we really focus on and that helps customers innovate better so the first is performance customers alwayswant higher and higher better and better performance um and so that'sreally critical to what we have when we launch a product on day one within fsx has to be ultra high performance one of the best performed products out there and then we continually evolve that over time second is cost and price and performance are often very closely related for customers and so a big part of what we focus on is how do we lower our infrastructure costs through innovations and pass those cost savings on to customers and part of it is how do we leverage capabilities within products like ontap uh compression and dtube and compaction and tiering to low cost storage all of those things how do we make it really easy for customers to take advantage of those capabilities the third is data capabilities data management capabilities data processing capabilities that's something that you and i have been working very closely on as we brought ontap to market and i know we have a very exciting roadmap which we can't unfortunately publicly talk about but some really exciting data capabilities coming down the line that help customers do more with their data and then finally tied to doing more with your data is integrations with other aws services so things like sagemaker and s3 and our container services these are all uh integrations that we have with fsx today and that you get withservices like ontap as part of fsx and we're hearing more and more from customers about other types of integrations they want in order to get all the benefits of ontap for storing their data but with all of the benefits of being able to do more with their data on the cloud on my side i'll finish with saying that there is a lot of more innovation coming on ontap from ransomware into performance and into a whole set of data services everything is going to be available on fsx for netapp on top so we are veryexcited for the present and for the future thank you very much ed thank you thanks for joining me thank you great to see you [Music]
