Content is still king

It’s one thing to use artificial intelligence on lowly back-end projects that may never yield results. It’s quite another to use AI with your customers to unlock the full potential of enterprise content and transform the way you work. That’s what Hyland is doing, and with NetApp’s help the company is putting content to work in innovative ways across multiple industries around the world.

“Our customers need access. They need to be able to get to their data and workflows.”

Casey Shenberger, cloud platform architect, Hyland

About

For more than 30 years, Hyland has been a leader in enterprise content management, helping companies capture, process and manage high volumes of diverse content and improving operational decisions and workflows. In fact, many of the Fortune 100 use Hyland solutions to fundamentally redefine how they operate and engage with those they serve.

Enterprises that rely heavily on documentation—healthcare, financial services, higher education, and insurance—use Hyland’s unified content, process and application intelligence solutions to unlock profound insights that fuel innovations.

The Ohio-based company has expanded over the years, offering specialized services as data has become increasingly important. Hyland Cloud is a continuation of that innovation, offering Hyland clients a cloud solution for better performance, cost, and flexibility.

The Business Challenge

Keep data safe and accessible

Because Hyland is responsible for so much of its customers’ content, compliance and security concerns are paramount. In concert with NetApp, Hyland must make sure its infrastructure is using industry standards and complying with all guidelines, permissions, and data availability.

“We have a somewhat unique file set – millions and millions of tiny files,” said Casey Shenberger, cloud platform architect at Hyland. “So replication of those for disaster recovery was always a challenge.”

In addition, Hyland’s customers in industries like banking and healthcare need to have the confidence that their content is safe – but also quickly accessible and reliable.

“Our customers need access,” Shenberger said. “They need to be able to get to their data and workflows.”

Plus, with new AI demands, data is growing faster than ever, yet customers expect the same level of access and insight into the content.

“Growing our infrastructure to keep up with those demands has definitely been a challenge,” Shenberger said.

“NetApp helps because they handle a lot of the unification, making things easier.”

NetApp Solution

Flexible infrastructure is key

NetApp has helped by providing the flexibility to scale Hyland’s infrastructure in ways that make sense for the company’s data strategy and environment.

Shenberger said that having NetApp technologies at the core of Hyland’s 19 colocated data centers made NetApp the right choice for cloud offerings.

The company has NetApp AFF and FAS investments in its data centers. NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP® software and the NetApp StorageGRID® object- based storage solution are used both on premises and with Hyland Cloud’s primary public cloud, AWS, including Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP.

Results and Business Impact

Unified approach brings great benefits

With the right type of intelligent data infrastructure in place, Hyland can provide the right solutions it needs for its customers. The technologies allow Hyland to quickly respond to client demands without capital investments in new colocations and shorten the time to market.

Hyland Cloud has been able to scale its storage to meet growing demand. Over a three-year span, the volume increased by a factor of 7—from 2PB to 14PB.

“NetApp helps because they handle a lot of the unification, making things easier,” Shenberger said. “Also, because of the efficiencies we gain from NetApp by storing more data in less physical space, that helps with budgeting. Always having the same operating system, ONTAP, means that we're able to do more because we don't need different training and expertise. It's all the same no matter what the workload is.”

NetApp product features such as deduplication are helping to control storage costs by increasing storage density and saving as much as 2PB of data.

In addition, the AFF C-Series solution provides a lower cost alternative but delivers fast access to large archive storage.

What’s Next

Keep content intelligent

Hyland continues to evolve its cloud solution. The company’s newest products are cloud native, and the intent is to always meet people where their data is. With that comes more innovation around content intelligence.

“Content intelligence is AI-driven, seamless access and integration to information about your data,” Shenberger said. “Our customers want to be able to intelligently and quickly access their data but also have insights into the data itself.

“That’s how you truly unlock the power of your content.”
