The storage manager receives a ticket from VM support about latency on a VM hosted on his storage resources. It notes this VM is moving slower than my grandma's dial up connection. Immediately, he checks the alert page where the issue stands out like a vital clue on a detective's desk. There is a sudden spike in latency. Channeling his inner Sherlock Holmes, he clicks into VM analyzer, his trusted magnifying glass, for a closer look at the VM and its storage resources. In this focused view, he notes the alert on the VM. The service map is clear, though, with no other alerts. Diving into the details, he notices the latency spike. A drop in IOPs and slower throughput. However, the storage volume it's on is perfectly normal using the VMs slide out panel. He spots it immediately. An infrastructure change. The memory of the VM has been reduced to a quarter of its prior allocation. Could this be the culprit? to verify. He adjusts the timeline settings for additional details. And there it is. Memory utilization is maxed out at 100% and swap usage shoots through the roof. The VM isn't slow because of the storage, it's out of memory and relying on disk swapping, which is causing the latency. A quick call to the Virtual Compute Team confirms the issue, and they restore the VM's memory to its earlier configuration. The storage manager watches as memory utilization normalizes, swap usage drops and latency resolves IOPs and throughput return to expected levels. Mystery solved and case closed. With Data infrastructure insights, you can resolve issues from alert to solution in minutes, not hours. Identify the root cause, not just the symptoms, and find all the issues so nothing is missed. Simplify service paths and connect the dots between assets and collaborate across teams.
Discover how the VM Analyzer feature in Data Infrastructure Insights simplifies investigation, pinpoints root causes, and helps you resolve problems with confidence.
