Minimum retention for backup vaults

May 21st, 2025

Starting today, allow-listed customers can enable immutable retention policies on their backup copies of NetApp Volumes. These immutable backups serve as a safeguard against accidental or intentional deletion, as they prevent even administrative users from erasing backups during the configured retention period. This robust feature is aligned with enterprise compliance requirements, offering peace of mind to organizations seeking a reliable data protection strategy.

Immutable backups are particularly beneficial for industries where regulatory standards demand strict data preservation. Enterprises can mitigate risks associated with data loss by ensuring the availability of critical information for up to 15years and protecting themselves against cyberattacks, operational errors, or system failures. The ability to lock backups in an unalterable state is an essential advancement for businesses striving for data integrity and security.

Until now, customers had to rely on secondary data management practices to maintain compliance and prevent accidental deletions. This often involved additional costs and complexities. With the introduction of immutable retention policies, NetApp customers can now streamline their processes, reducing the overhead associated with manual data safeguarding efforts. This new capability not only enhances the overall reliability of data storage but also empowers organizations to adapt to increasingly stringent compliance demands. As the digital landscape evolves, NetApp remains committed to providing innovative solutions that cater to the ever-growing needs of modern enterprises.
