Double Encryption at rest is now generally available (GA)

Aug, 2024

Azure NetApp Files, an Azure native, first-party, enterprise-class, high-performance file storage service, has released double encryption at rest, now generally available (GA). This release implements two layers of encryption to enhance data security. The first layer utilizes hardware-based encryption on the storage devices, ensuring that data is encrypted as it is written to the physical media. The second layer applies software-based encryption at the volume level, adding an additional layer of protection by encrypting data as it is managed within the file system.

While a single layer of encryption at rest may be considered sufficient for most data, double encryption is critical for sensitive data where a breach would result in extremely high liability. Sensitive data is often found in places such as financial institutions, military users, healthcare systems, government records and customer data in business in general. The use of Azure NetApp File’s double encryption feature makes it possible for this class of data to be stored safely in the cloud. Customers can easily enable double encryption during capacity pool creation, enhancing data security without significant overhead. The seamless integration of this advanced security layer into existing workflows ensures minimal disruption and operational efficiency, allowing organizations to focus on their core business activities with peace of mind that their data is safeguarded against potential threats.
