Azure NetApp Files application volume group for Oracle (preview)

April, 2024

Azure NetApp Files, a native, 1st-party file storage service in Azure that makes it easy and cost-effective to run file-based applications in the cloud using the same protocols and tools customers rely upon on-premises, has released the Azure NetApp Files application volume group (AVG) for Oracle feature, designed to shorten database data and log volumes deployment time to a few minutes and increase overall database performance and stability.

This feature implements several capabilities to deploy volumes and run Oracle databases on Azure Native Files optimally. All required volumes for an Oracle database are created in a single “atomic” operation through the Azure portal, CLI, or API. This includes data, redo log, archive redo log, backup and binary volumes. Azure NetApp Files application volume group for Oracle offers a range of deployment options from small databases using a single volume to up to multi-100-TiB sized databases using multiple volumes, all with optimized performance. To minimize latency, all volumes are placed in the same availability zone as the VM, and multiple storage endpoints are used to avoid network congestion and to increase overall application performance and scalability. Before the availability of Azure NetApp Files application volume group for Oracle, customers had to manually deploy volumes to optimize for overall database performance, without any control over storage endpoint creation.

The Azure NetApp Files application volume group for Oracle feature is now in preview. Additional information can be found in the documentation.
