New Course: Cloud Volumes ONTAP Deployment and Management for Azure

Mark Carlton

Working from home over the past 3 weeks has given me the chance to do a few things: I cleaned my home office, caught up on email and project work, and finally started to plan my training for the next couple of months.

Over the last few years, I have been turning to more online training courses. So I’ve decided, while I sit here over the next few months, to blog about my experiences and hopefully help people uncover some new learning tools.

I started by brushing up on some of NetApp’s Azure Internet of Things (IoT) labs. I also stumbled across some NetApp online training that covered deployment and management of NetApp® Cloud Volumes ONTAP® for Azure. I thought I would have a go at the new Cloud Volumes ONTAP Deployment and Management for Azure course and see what it covered.

This course covers information that is very relevant in today’s market and well suited for NetApp’s new hybrid cloud certifications. You get a high-level view of the NetApp solution, with a deep dive into the architecture and hybrid cloud deployment. Having been a part of the team that wrote and delivered the hybrid cloud certifications, I was keen to understand how the course would help learners pass their exams.

Here’s a Look at the Lessons in the Course:

  • Lesson 1: Cloud Manager and Cloud Volumes ONTAP Overview
  • Lesson 2: Azure Networking
  • Lesson 3: Using Cloud Manager to Deploy Cloud Volumes ONTAP
  • Lesson 4: Part 1 – Provisioning Storage and Accessing Data
  • Lesson 5: Part 2 – Cloud Manager Features
  • Lesson 6: Managing Data Across a Hybrid Cloud
  • Lesson 7: Storage Tiering in Cloud Volumes ONTAP
What impressed me about this course was how the delivery of each module is built up. You start with a video that takes you through a clear presentation of what the module covers, with a deeper dive into the subject, followed by a demo of how to deploy and manage Cloud Volumes ONTAP. Finally, you get a Hands-On Lab that enables you to build your own environment.

This course does a great job of helping you understand, deploy, manage, and demonstrate Cloud Volumes ONTAP for Azure. If you know the basics of networking in the cloud, and you know your way around the Azure portal, you are in a good starting place.

If I’m being honest, I don’t always do well when it comes to training. It’s not that I don’t learn—I just find it hard to listen to narrated slides. To help people like me, NetApp has introduced a self-paced element that helps you get a hands-on experience with an actual environment and deploy in your own Azure subscription. I know some people won’t like this and would prefer a lab, but I like to do a training course and then go away and apply it. If things are built in online labs, you don’t get the ability to do that.

Certification exams are not just theory. Reading a book or looking at some slides doesn’t always give you the knowledge you need to pass the exam. The knowledge checks in this course made sure I learned the theory. With the Hands-On Labs and real environment deployment, I got a strong test and the enablement I needed to be successful in the real world. That’s really what you need to pass a certification exam.
