Data drives performance

As a dominant force in global motorsport, Porsche Motorsport is renowned for technical innovation and precision engineering. With victories across prestigious racing series like the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), Porsche understands just how critical lightning-quick decision-making is to maintaining an on-track edge.

Every race-day refinement is driven by data. Porsche Motorsport depends on real-time processing of vast amounts of data to make strategic adjustments, optimize vehicle performance, and stay ahead of rivals.

With NetApp, Porsche Motorsport built a modern, intelligent data infrastructure that delivers consistent data services across any location, workload, or system. Porsche Motorsport can seamlessly connect track-side operations with data centers in Weissach, Germany and Mooresville, North Carolina for a connected, simplified, ready-to-scale data solution that won't slow them down.

“Motorsport is now data-driven, and we need our data available wherever we are. With NetApp, we ensured our trackside teams had immediate access to critical insights, helping us win races.”

Paul Stiegele, IT Product Manager, Porsche Motorsport

Every millisecond counts

Porsche Motorsport's success hinges on real-time telemetry insights collected from race cars hurtling around the track. IoT data, including tire degradation and energy consumption, is collected trackside, then transmitted to a simulator at Porsche Motorsport HQ in Weissach, Germany.

To make effective in-race decisions, the trackside team needs instantaneous access to sensor data. But the physical gap between Porsche Motorsport’s European and North American data centers and racetracks located all over the globe led to data delays, siloed data, and security risks.

Porsche Motorsport needed to modernize its data environment to create an optimized, secured, and protected infrastructure foundation that allowed them to manage any data, for any application, anywhere it's needed.

“We need to analyze telemetry data to understand how to improve a car and provide real-time feedback to the driver. With quick insights, we can refine the car’s performance and guide the driver to improve his driving style.”

The approach

As Porsche Motorsport's exclusive Intelligent Data Infrastructure provider, NetApp helped build an ultra-fast data ecosystem that delivers the speed and precision that world-class racing demands. NetApp transformed Porsche Motorsport's cloud strategy to resolve latency and backup challenges, offering mobility, flexibility, and security across a hybrid, multi-cloud environment.

NetApp's commitment to continuous innovation means Porsche Motorsport can put data in the driver's seat, getting real-time insights at the speed of racing.

“To improve performance, we’re leveraging AI to assist our race engineers. Setting up the car for a race is a complex, multi-dimensional task where finding the optimal setup is crucial for speed. For this, we use simulations. Previously, those simulations took minutes, but with AI, we’ve reduced this to seconds.”

Continuous innovation

Porsche Motorsport depends on data to steer success beyond the racetrack.

Faster access

Porsche Motorsport's modernized data infrastructure reduces time to retrieve and analyze trackside data from minutes to seconds, allowing the team to make faster, more informed decisions. They can quickly identify irregularities, make real-time adjustments, and refine strategies on the go to improve the car's performance, adapt to rapidly changing conditions, and gain a competitive advantage.

Streamlined storage

Data Infrastructure Modernization break down the silos that slow Porsche Motorsport down. Seamless infrastructure integration improves collaboration between trackside crews and specialists in Weissach, allowing for easy shared analysis and instant changes to optimize racing performance. The team saves valuable time and empowers the entire team to operate as a cohesive unit, united in its pursuit of on-track success.

Reliability and security

With built-in cyber resilience, Porsche Motorsport stays protected against relentless threats and attacks. NetApp enables real-time anomaly detection, secure data isolation, and rapid recovery, allowing the Porsche Motorsport team to focus wholeheartedly on racing, confident that their data is backed by the most secure storage on the planet.

“To remain world-champions, we not only need a faster race car and better operations than the competition, but we need to make faster race-critical decisions too. NetApp’s intelligent data infrastructure can deliver that competitive edge.”

The final lap

In racing, winning really is about being the fastest on the track, but that speed is only achievable with uninterrupted access to accurate, intelligent data. Porsche Motorsport’s collaboration with NetApp showcases how critical real-time data is to success. You can build the fastest car, but victory slips away without the ability to maintain and optimize it during the race.

With technology, Porsche doesn’t just win races, it pushes the boundaries of innovation in motorsport.

Moving forward, Porsche aims to integrate AI-based analytics into its racing strategy. With unwavering confidence built into NetApp® technology, Porsche will expand its ability to optimize costs and leverage Keystone for on-premises solutions to complement its cloud systems.
