Security companies are working overtime to stay ahead of malicious actors, and NetApp is no different.

Two of the company’s security leaders recently sat down and discussed the state of the industry, along with the latest tools to stop ransomware.

NetApp’s Mignona Cote, chief security officer, and Matt Trudewind, technical security solutions specialist, believe that one of the first challenges is complexity.

“One of the things that we suffer through in the security world is so many vendors,” Cote said. “We need a way to simplify security.”

The impact of cloud and security

For companies using the cloud, the process starts with code, she said.

“With the cloud, you can reimagine how you develop security,” she said. “You don’t have to think of so many tools. Instead, you can build it in the actual code.

“With the cloud you’ve got three layers: your configurations, your code, and then get to the storage.”

Once at the storage or data layer, that’s where you can use the built-in protections of NetApp® ONTAP® data management software.

“We are a data security company at NetApp,” said Trudewind. “We kind of think of ourselves as a last line of defense.”

How AI helps with cybersecurity

Trudewind said NetApp’s new AI-powered ransomware protection is 99% effective in our testing.

“We’re using it for good at NetApp,” he said. “We’ve taken an AI model… and we have trained it internally at NetApp to look for ransomware. It looks at signatures, it looks at file headers, data entropy, which is randomness of data file extensions. And based on all that, we saw internally we were able to detect 99% of known ransomware today.”

After the results, NetApp had it verified by a third-party lab.

And if you’re wondering about other attacks that might slip through, Trudewind says NetApp has you covered.

“The key there is we think about recoverability,” he said. “We have quick, efficient Snapshot backup copies you can recover from. I mean, we’re talking about terabytes of data in seconds.”

You can also back up the NetApp Snapshot™ copies when using cyber vaults.

NetApp’s cyber vault provides an impenetrable layer of security, so your data remains immutable, indelible, and readily available even in the face of evolving threats. A NetApp cyber vault locks away Snapshot copies of your data with strict access controls using a validated hardened configuration—all with the same API and orchestration suite support as all ONTAP systems.

In other words, Trudewind said, these are just some of the ways that make NetApp the most secure storage on the planet.
