NetApp provides a free, global product take-back program for customers and partners. We also take back competitor products, if replaced by new NetApp products. We provide full traceability and chain of custody documentation and divert more than 99 percent of returned products from the landfill.
We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about our product take-back program.
NetApp is subject to a wide range of regulations, and some states and countries have unique requirements for the management of e-waste. Under the EU’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulation, NetApp is responsible for the collection and disposal of any e-waste sold to a customer in Europe. Similarly in India, we have an External Producer Responsibility (EPR) plan.

We provide detailed, product-level environmental data to help customers make informed hardware purchasing decisions that align with their sustainability goals. Using Product Attribute to Impact Algorithm (PAIA) cradle-to-grave carbon footprint methodology, we assess the environmental impact of our products and publish Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) reports.
As a dedicated member of the PAIA consortium, NetApp collaborates with leading ICT peers to shape the future of data. We actively engage in technical working groups to enhance carbon footprint estimate accuracy throughout the hardware lifecycle. Together, we are pioneering a more sustainable and innovative future.
We continue to roll out updated packaging designs across our product lines, reducing virgin material use while enhancing recyclability and improving packaging and shipping efficiency.
We maintain high quality standards, embrace modular design, and implement reuse strategies to keep our products in use for as long as possible.
By relentlessly pursuing three strategic outcomes – delivering intelligent, sustainable data infrastructure; cultivating a high-performance culture; and building a resilient business, we aim to lead the industry in delivering a portfolio of products and solutions that empowers both business transformation and business responsibility.
At NetApp, we’re committed to delivering innovative solutions that meet the highest global standards for quality and sustainability. Our ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications reflect our dedication to excellence and environmental stewardship. By complying with key international directives, including WEEE, RoHS, and REACH, we ensure our products are safe, responsible, and designed to minimize environmental impact. Together, we’re building a future where technology and sustainability go hand in hand.
