Behind the magic: when technology keeps pace with imagination

Every cinematic masterpiece depends on what audiences never see. What happens when technology fuels creativity instead of slowing it down?

Behind the scenes

Some of the most unforgettable moments in modern movies weren’t filmed as we see them. They were imagined first, then painstakingly built, frame by frame, by visual effects artists to make the impossible feel real.

For studios like Rising Sun Pictures (RSP), bringing these worlds to life requires more than creativity: It requires technology that can keep pace with imagination.

For more than three decades, the Adelaide-based studio has pushed the boundaries of visual effects, most recently earning an Academy Award nomination for its work on the 2025 Ryan Coogler film Sinners.

RSP’s challenge isn’t imagination. It’s making sure that technology never slows it down.

A plot twist in performance

As visual effects productions grew more ambitious, so did the demands placed on the systems supporting Rising Sun Pictures.

Artists and rendering farms increasingly competed for bandwidth during busy production periods. When one workload scaled up, the other could feel it immediately.

Work paused while storage caught up. Creative momentum stalled. During the worst periods, artists could be left waiting for minutes—or even step away entirely while systems caught up.

At the same time, disaster recovery and archiving processes relied on manual steps, adding complexity to an already demanding pipeline.

As part of the global Pitch Black network of visual effects studios, RSP understood that any infrastructure investment needed to solve today’s challenges while remaining flexible enough to support continued growth and evolution.

ONTAP eliminated the disk performance tradeoff between our two workloads, giving our artists more freedom to create.

Rewriting the script

Artists and rendering systems could finally work side by side without competing for performance. Bottlenecks that once slowed production disappeared.

To remove those constraints, Rising Sun Pictures partnered with NetApp® and integration specialist Katana1 to modernize its data foundation.

Together, they built a high-performance platform on NetApp AFF C‑Series all-flash systems and NetApp ONTAP data management software, enabling artists to access the massive datasets powering modern visual effects faster.

The new environment makes it possible to do more than ever before:

  • Work at full speed across multipetabyte productions, without slowing artists or rendering systems
  • Protect and recover critical creative assets automatically without slowing production
  • Collaborate seamlessly across global studios, with instant access to shared data

The impact was immediate. For the first time, performance wasn’t part of the conversation. It improved so dramatically that the studio accelerated its migration timeline, completing the rollout far ahead of the original six-month plan.

More importantly, it changed how artists work every day. Instead of waiting on infrastructure, they can stay in the creative flow, iterating, refining, and pushing scenes further without interruption.

Casting the perfect co-star

Technology alone wasn’t the deciding factor in Rising Sun Pictures’ choice.

What stood out was how NetApp approached the challenge, taking the time to understand visual effects production itself, where artists, rendering systems, and massive datasets must move in lockstep.

Working closely with the studio’s infrastructure team, NetApp, and integration partner Katana1, designed a solution tailored to its creative workflows and future growth. The partnership gave RSP the confidence to keep pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling.

While others focused on selling a product, NetApp understood our business and delivered a solution that actually fit.

The blockbuster payoff

With its new data foundation in place, Rising Sun Pictures can move at the pace modern visual effects demand.

Artists and rendering systems now work side by side without competing for performance, accelerating production timelines and allowing teams to iterate more freely.

The impact became clear during a recent 12-month project that generated more than six petabytes of data. Despite the enormous workload, the studio experienced no slowdowns, service tickets, or downtime.

Integrated ONTAP replication also ensures that critical creative assets remain protected and accessible for future productions—an essential capability in an industry where studios may revisit projects years later.

The real shift, however, was what disappeared. Conversations about storage performance, slowdowns, and workarounds faded from view, replaced by a quiet focus on the work itself.

Most importantly, the new infrastructure removes barriers for the artists themselves. With technology no longer dictating what’s possible, teams can experiment more, iterate faster, and push visual storytelling further than before.

For movie lovers, the technology is invisible, but the impact is unmistakable. The worlds on screen are richer, more detailed, and more immersive because artists are free to push further.

Since partnering with NetApp, we haven’t needed to talk about disk performance once. We focus on storytelling, not infrastructure.

Furiosa

To be continued . . .

Looking ahead, RSP is expanding its platform to support deeper collaboration across the Pitch Black studio network.

With NetApp enabling instant access to shared data worldwide, projects can move seamlessly between teams, connecting artists with the resources needed to bring each scene to life, ensuring the right data reaches the right artists, wherever they are, without delay.

Over time, that foundation could allow work to move between teams across time zones, so one stage of production advances while another studio sleeps. The result? Faster production cycles, greater creative flexibility, and the freedom to take on even more ambitious visual effects.

For Rising Sun Pictures, the next chapter of cinematic storytelling is already underway, and with NetApp as the studio’s data foundation, the possibilities are only getting bigger.
