Why infrastructure can’t fix your supply chain

Why infrastructure can’t fix your supply chain

I’ve seen a common pattern in IT: buying infrastructure before truly knowing what the solution looks like. If, for some reason, any of that infrastructure is hard to source?

Suddenly, everyone is asking the same question: How much can we buy, and how quickly can we get it?

It’s a natural reaction. When uncertainty enters the market, the instinct is to secure resources before they become even harder to obtain. We’re seeing that today as organizations navigate component shortages, rising infrastructure costs, and increasing demand driven by AI initiatives.

But while buying more infrastructure may feel like the safest response, I don’t believe it’s the smartest one.

The reality is that today’s supply chain challenges require a different approach. Instead of immediately looking outward for more hardware, organizations should first look inward at how they use the resources they already have and whether their infrastructure strategy aligns with where the business is headed.

Start with what you already have

Whenever IT teams face pressure to acquire more infrastructure, my first recommendation is simple: can you rethink what you have?

  • Where is data stored?
  • How is it being accessed, and is it being moved/copied/duplicated?
  • What capacity do you have available today?
  • What workloads are consuming the most resources?
  • Are those workloads getting the resources they truly deserve?
  • This exercise isn’t just about hardware. It’s also about understanding your data. What data is critical? What data is rarely accessed? What data may become more valuable in the future?

The goal isn’t simply a prescriptive view of your storage estate. Often, data center infrastructure reflects years of incremental decisions rather than a deliberate strategy. By looking at your current environment holistically and understanding what exists and how it’s used, you want to understand whether your current environment can support where the business wants to go next. Often, we discover there is more flexibility than we realized.

AI is changing old assumptions

One reason this conversation is becoming more important is that AI is changing many of the assumptions we’ve relied on for years.

Traditionally, enterprise data followed a predictable lifecycle. Data was created, actively used for a period, and eventually became “cold.” As data aged, organizations moved it to lower-cost storage because it was unlikely to be accessed frequently again.

AI is disrupting that model.

Historical data that once sat untouched in archives may suddenly become valuable for analytics, AI training, or retrieval-based applications. Data that was considered dormant can become relevant again.

That shift has implications for infrastructure planning. We can no longer assume data will remain in one place forever. Data may need to move between storage tiers, cloud environments, and AI platforms as business needs change.

The challenge isn’t simply buying more infrastructure for today’s workload. It’s creating an environment that can adapt to tomorrow’s requirements.

Avoid falling back on yesterday’s solutions

When infrastructure shortages occur, many organizations naturally look to familiar solutions.

If SSDs become expensive or difficult to obtain, the conversation often turns to hard drives. If newer technologies face constraints, teams start evaluating older approaches that may be more readily available.

There’s nothing wrong with considering those options. The problem occurs when familiarity becomes the primary decision-making factor.

Every infrastructure decision should be evaluated within the broader context of business goals and future requirements.

For example, adding large amounts of traditional storage may address a short-term capacity issue. But what if your organization is simultaneously trying to reserve data center space, power, and cooling for AI initiatives? What if sustainability goals require reducing energy consumption? What if future workloads require greater data mobility?

A solution that addresses one challenge may create several new ones.

That’s why infrastructure teams need to think beyond immediate procurement concerns and consider the long-term impact of their decisions today.

Think beyond hardware

One of the biggest mistakes organizations make during periods of supply chain uncertainty is treating the challenge as a hardware problem.

It’s much broader than that.

Storage teams, infrastructure teams, security teams, application owners, and business leaders all have a role to play. Decisions about infrastructure affect everything from security and compliance to application performance and AI readiness.

The answer lies in shifting the conversation from technology decisions to business priorities.

Whether the goal is greater efficiency, stronger security, faster innovation, or AI adoption, infrastructure investments should support those outcomes. Addressing these priorities before procurement can also speed up the process and gain better stakeholder alignment.

Prioritize flexibility

If there is one lesson I’ve learned throughout multiple technology transitions, from virtualization to cloud to today’s AI-driven environment, it’s that flexibility matters.

Technology changes. Business priorities change. Data requirements change.

The organizations that succeed are rarely the ones that make the biggest investments. They’re the ones that preserve options.

That means considering technologies and architecture that support mobility, automation, and data movement. It means evaluating not only what a platform does today, but how easily it can adapt to future requirements.

Most importantly, it means recognizing that modernization isn’t simply replacing one technology with another. It’s creating an infrastructure strategy that can evolve alongside the business.

The real solution to the supply chain crisis

So, should you buy your way out of a supply chain crisis?

My answer is no.

Additional infrastructure may be part of the solution. But purchasing more hardware without understanding your environment, your data, and your business goals is unlikely to deliver the outcome you’re hoping for.

The better approach is to start with visibility. Understand what you have today, what the business is trying to achieve, and what capabilities already exist within your environment. Then evaluate how technology can help you get there.

Supply chain constraints may eventually ease, but the need to adapt will remain. Organizations that take a strategic view, one that balances infrastructure, data, and business outcomes, will be better positioned for whatever comes next.
