Continuous data availability with SnapMirror active sync for NAS

Today, as part of the ONTAP 9.19.1 release, SnapMirror active sync (SMas) is now available for NAS workloads. After solely supporting block workloads, this change extends NetApp’s data replication coverage, helping customers maintain uptime and prevent data loss.

The technology

SnapMirror active sync provides zero RPO and near-zero RTO for applications. It keeps data accessible in the face of natural or manmade disasters, site outages, and hardware failure.

For block workloads, it replicates data at the Consistency Group level, and for the newly released NAS support, it functions at the SVM level. The technology uses a mediator to facilitate automated failover between sites, and it functions in an active-passive configuration.

Simplifying data availability

Data replication is key to maintaining business operations and uptime, so it shouldn't be a last-minute addition to an organization’s data availability approach.

NetApp simplifies data availability as SMas is built into the NetApp ONTAP operating system. This streamlines adoption and helps businesses prepare for unplanned outages without additional hardware costs.

Beyond cost savings, SMas for NAS offers flexibility, as it is compatible with different storage types, including NetApp AFF (A series and C series) and AFX. Additionally, SMas for NAS works alongside SMas for SAN, providing consistency across workloads, leading to less complexity.

Granular recovery is also achievable with SMas for NAS. By replicating data at the SVM level, users have the option to configure SMas on select SVMs, and they also get to decide how they want to failover – either all at once or on an SVM-by-SVM basis.

SnapMirror Active Sync Use cases

SnapMirror active sync for NAS has multiple use cases. It allows for easy, quick cloning of datasets which can then be leveraged for testing and development. This functionality maximizes disaster recovery infrastructures and accelerates testing workflows.

It also offers multiple host configurations, ensuring that users have the customization their infrastructure demands. For example, users can choose between an on-premises mediator or cloud mediator to best meet their needs.
