Several things come to mind when I hear the word “quick.” I once saw thousands of dollars vanish from my checking account in minutes from a PayPal hack (thanks to PayPal and my bank for making everything right). A cheetah can accelerate from a stand-still to 60 mph in about 3 seconds – quick indeed. That puts cheetahs in the neighborhood of some stratospheric supercars like the Ferrari F8 Tributo, Porsche 911 Turbo, and McLaren Senna. Yowzah! Finally, I’ve learned that my own quickness/reaction time is rather unimpressive—I fall in the bottom 20% or so, according to Human Benchmark. I’m pretty sure that I can blame my parents for that.

Quickness (like speed) is an important attribute to more than wild animals, athletes and wannabe athletes, and supercars. Online gamers desire low latency for a more realistic gaming environment. Capital markets firms rely on high-speed trading (with low latency) to quickly execute their algorithms and beat their fellow traders. Latency is vitally important to Oracle databases (and others as well). Consistently low latency for transactional, as well as analytical, workloads can have a huge effect on the user experience, improving employee productivity, customer retention, and your odds of winning at Powerball.

What if you could get a tenfold improvement in your average wait time for storage? What if you could save the equivalent of a “core” for every node in your Oracle RAC environment? According to Oracle’s price list, that’s about US$86,000 in deferred savings (including annual support) – per node.

Of course you would need a vendor that supported true end-to-end NVMe to help realize these savings and performance. What is “true” end-to-end NVMe? Well, it isn’t just throwing NVMe drives into a rejiggered SAN array. It’s about (nondisruptively) enabling NVMe over your existing SAN to the host—and you need NetApp for that.
