Inventing the data foundation for the AI era

Every time enterprise compute has changed shape, NetApp has had to answer the same question: what happens to storage now? NetApp Tech Summit 2026 was where more than a hundred of the company's Distinguished Engineers, Principal Engineers, and technology leaders spent two days answering it for the AI era. It wasn't designed as a conventional state-of-the-business gathering. It was a two-day, engineering-led call to invention, centered on a deceptively simple question: what must NetApp create next?

Day One opened with a clear message from Syam Nair, EVP and Chief Product Officer: Trust is not an inheritance. It's something re-earned through every architectural choice, every customer experience, and every platform decision. Nair framed innovation not as novelty for its own sake, but as simplification that wins customer trust — removing steps, closing gaps, and making complex systems easier to use and believe in.



Arindam Banerjee, Chief Platform and Technology Officer, then set the strongest throughline of the summit: when compute shifts, storage reinvents itself. NetApp has participated in every major transition — from mainframes to open systems, where NFS was born, through the shift to compute virtualization, where NetApp came to dominate. The GPU-first supercycle, Banerjee argued, may be the largest shift yet. For the first time in years, the bottleneck is no longer simply compute — it's the data pipeline that has to keep GPUs, models, agents, and applications continuously fed with trusted context.

This theme aligns with the broader NetApp AI infrastructure direction — intelligent data services, metadata enrichment, governance, and AI factory enablement. The summit made that strategy feel immediate: enterprise AI won't scale on raw compute alone. It requires an intelligent, secure, and semantically aware data foundation.

From AI factories to agent-native data

Day Two extended the conversation from AI infrastructure to agent-native data. Krish Vitaldevara, Chief Product Officer at Sage, argued that agents are becoming the new users of enterprise systems. In that world, context is the new currency. Storage platforms still have to deliver on access patterns, latency, governance, and APIs — but now they also need semantic understanding, knowledge graphs, and full data management for unstructured data.

The headline panel on metadata gravity sharpened the point: in the AI era, metadata isn't a passive index. It's the control plane for intelligence, policy, search, reasoning, and automation. If agents are going to operate safely and usefully across enterprise data estates, they need trusted metadata, governed access, and a foundation that bridges structured and unstructured information.

By the end of Day Two, NetApp Tech Summit 2026 landed as a call to action. The consistent message across the keynotes, research sessions, agent-native data discussions, and innovation showcase was that the AI supercycle has moved the industry's bottleneck from compute to data. NetApp's opportunity is to lead not only in storage performance, but in the intelligence, metadata, governance, and guarantee layers that sit above it.

The summit closed with its most entrepreneurial moment: the Next Billion Technology Showcase, where NetApp's technical teams pitched what they believe could become the company's next billion-dollar business. The ideas were bold, the competition was fierce, and the demos felt less like a research exercise and more like platform bets requiring real leadership decisions.
