FlexCache & Storage Acceleration Appliance

With FlexCache™ software, you can scale out storage performance for large computer farms, accelerate data access from remote offices, and simplify management of tiered storage.

FlexCache software creates a caching layer in your storage infrastructure that automatically adapts to changing usage patterns, eliminating performance bottlenecks.

In addition, FlexCache automatically replicates and serves hot data sets anywhere in your infrastructure using local caching volumes. This is useful for:

• Compute-intensive applications such as movie rendering, electronic design automation, seismic analysis, and financial markets simulation
• Software development and testing in distributed environments
• Automated tiered storage, where all data resides on inexpensive SATA disks and is cached on faster disks as needed

When used for remote caching, FlexCache simplifies file distribution and reduces your overall data management and WAN bandwidth costs.

FlexCache software can be added to existing FAS or V-Series systems running NFS. Dedicated storage acceleration systems can be implemented where only the caching function is required out of the storage systems. NetApp® Storage Acceleration (SA) Appliances are a family of storage systems that host only FlexCache volumes. While FlexCache software can be added to existing FAS or V-Series systems running NFS, customers will find this new family of products more cost effective in deployments where only the caching function is required out of the storage systems. NetApp SA Appliances support both standalone and active-active configuration.
