The Oak Hills Local School District in western Hamilton County, Ohio, is the county’s third-largest district, serving about 8,100 students in preschool through grade 12. For 9 years, Oak Hills has earned an Excellent rating on the state report card while maintaining the county’s lowest per-student spend. Caring, highly qualified teachers and staff deliver a wide range of youth and adult services, including programs for gifted students, special education services, and vocational and community education.
Like many public schools, Oak Hills Local School District needed to retire hundreds of aging and increasingly high-maintenance computers while implementing district-wide budget reductions. The school system could optimize its limited budget by virtualizing computers and allowing students to use their own personal laptops and mobile devices. The superintendent challenged his staff to find the ideal solution and become a technology leader among public schools.
Oak Hills IT hired Champion Solutions Group, an infrastructure solutions provider that partners with Cisco, NetApp, and VMware. Within the school’s budget and the confines of their existing contracts, the team built a private cloud and virtualized 1,200 desktops in two months that now powers online courses and anywhere, anytime, access from any device. The students are so fascinated by the high tech approach to learning that hundreds of them actually logged into their educational content during a snow day.

The new technology transformed classroom and school performance by enabling the district to incorporate emerging technologies. Equally important, students and teachers now have a 24 x 7 anytime, anywhere learning environment that supports access from student-owned devices. Oak Hills used more affordable thin-clients to slash desktop TCO by 67%, updated their desktops 98% faster than before, and achieved a 13-month payback and a 3-year savings of US$1.27M.
