NetApp® NearStore® Virtual Tape Library Rings True for Cincinnati Bell Technology Solutions
Sunnyvale, Calif. - October 9, 2007 --
Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of
storage and data management solutions, today announced that
Cincinnati Bell Technology Solutions (CBTS) has deployed a NetApp
NearStore Virtual Tape Library (VTL) to increase the performance
and reliability of backups and to simplify backup management. The
NearStore VTL is part of a broad portfolio of disk-to-disk (D2D)
backup and recovery solutions that deliver unmatched simplicity and
value, for both data center and remote office environments.
Thousands of businesses pay CBTS Managed
Backup Services to protect and store their data. By outsourcing
these services to professionals, CBTS customers can concentrate on
their business instead of on their infrastructure. In turn, CBTS
requires reliable backup and recovery solutions that can keep pace
with customer growth that generates an average of 100 terabytes of
new data each month.
"We recently switched to the NetApp NearStore
VTL," said Tom Simpson, director of Strategy and Development at
CBTS. "We're now able to compress data at high performance, 50% to
100% faster, and this translates directly into cost savings because
we can meet our service levels while using fewer disks. The
NearStore VTL also helps us run our Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)
software more efficiently by speeding up the process for reclaiming
free space for new backups."
In addition to a performance boost, Simpson
and team gained the ability to quickly increase their storage
capacity for backup data. Employees can add a disk to the NetApp
NearStore VTL700 in less than a day, rather than waiting up to two
weeks for a professional services team to do it.
"In our experience, NetApp is easy to work
with, both as a technology and as a company," continued Simpson.
"NetApp is emerging as our primary storage vendor, and we are
excited about standardizing our organization on NetApp
CBTS worked closely with NetApp Global
Services to design and implement the new approach. Along with the
NetApp NearStore VTL700, CBTS deployed a NetApp FAS270 to support
new NAS and iSCSI SAN storage requirements, and the company plans
to add ReplicatorX™ software to replicate and recover data
between heterogeneous storage systems around the region.
"NetApp VTL solutions provide customers with
the storage industry's most powerful combination of performance,
scalability, and cost savings to meet the challenges of backup and
recovery in the age of massive data growth," said Patrick Rogers,
vice president of Solutions Marketing at Network Appliance. "CBTS
is a great example of how our customers and, in turn, their
customers, benefit from the speed, efficiency, and reliability of
the solutions NetApp provides over the competition."
The NetApp NearStore Virtual Tape Library is a
disk-to-disk backup appliance that appears like a tape library to a
backup software application but provides the superior speed and
reliability of disk technologies. Developed specifically to address
the requirements of backup administrators, NearStore VTL solutions
increase the performance and reliability of backups, simplify
backup management, and reduce D2D storage costs by up to 67%
through the use of high-performance disk compression.
