NetApp Delivers Speed and Efficiency to Roma Metropolitane
Sunnyvale, Calif. - September 24, 2007
-- Network Appliance, Inc.
(NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of storage and data management
solutions, today announced Roma Metropolitane, the company
responsible for developing and modernizing the Rome metro network,
has implemented NAS solutions from NetApp to help solve its
information access, archiving, management, and security problems.
With its new NetApp system, Roma Metropolitane scaled their storage
capacity from 2TB to 15TB, drastically increased its storage
throughput, and achieved more reliable, faster backups while
emphasizing network speed. With NetApp facilitating the growth of
its data network, Roma Metropolitane is better able to expand and
improve Rome's metro network, benefiting the system's 230 million
(and rising) riders each year.
Since 2004, Roma Metropolitane has been busy
planning and implementing the expansion of the metro, a mammoth
task that involves increasing the number of lines from two to five
and the number of passengers from 230 million to more than 500
million a year. In order to achieve this, a second office was
opened near one of the construction sites, resulting in a greater
volume of information to be managed, archived, accessed, updated,
shared, and protected from unauthorized access. It quickly became
apparent that the existing storage architecture was not up to the
higher demands. To solve this problem, Roma Metropolitane installed
a second network storage system based on the NetApp FAS270,
increasing the storage capacity of the old system from 2TB to more
than 15TB. The replication services were configured incrementally
between the two NAS systems with control of band utilization.
Finally, backup schedules were adjusted using NetApp
SnapMirror® to ensure optimum utilization of the
"The situation was becoming untenable," said
Andrea Spaziani, manager of the IT Organizational Unit at Roma
Metropolitane. "Now we have a storage infrastructure that can
effectively meet the constantly evolving needs of our company. The
new NAS system has enabled us to reduce our information management
costs, while file access speeds have increased by 500%, resulting
in quicker and more streamlined data and project management.
Furthermore, with the introduction of the backup solutions, we have
managed to complete daily archiving four hours earlier than when
using the old system."
"Information is a strategic corporate asset
for Roma Metropolitane," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of
Solutions Marketing at NetApp, "but the huge rise in the quantity
of data makes it very difficult to manage. Our objective is to
offer companies like Roma Metropolitane products that simplify and
speed up information access while also reducing costs. This
benefits not only our customers, but also the people relying on
them for services, in this case, the citizens of Rome."
