NetApp® Storage for E-Mail Archival and Compliance Surpasses EMC Centera Performance

Sunnyvale, Calif. - September 12, 2006 -- Evolving corporate governance policies and a heightened emphasis on storage efficiency demand that today's enterprise deploy archival solutions that will easily scale and adapt with changing business needs. E-mail leads the list of applications that are being archived in data centers around the world.

Today Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) announced the results of a study from VeriTest, the testing service of Lionbridge (NASDAQ: LIOX), which found that software from the leading vendor for e-mail archival environments running on NetApp storage delivers customers up to twice the performance of EMC Centera Gen4 storage. The full VeriTest™ report is available at the Lionbridge web site. NetApp also challenged the industry with an enterprise-wide, unified approach for solving archive and compliance needs (visit

The VeriTest study compared the performance of the NetApp FAS3050 and NearStore R200 storage systems to that of EMC Centera Gen4 storage. The results are further proof that NetApp storage provides customers with a fast, flexible, and cost-effective solution for e-mail archival and various compliance needs.

The NetApp unified storage architecture and simplified approach to data management allow enterprises to run their primary and secondary storage with multiple protocols on a single storage infrastructure. This approach delivers the superior performance and high availability customers need for each application with a flexible, unified solution-as opposed to requiring separate storage silos. The unified approach tested by VeriTest, running industry-leading email archiving software on NetApp storage, found that the solution reduces the cost and simplifies the tasks of archival and compliance, in stark contrast to the multiple silo approach taken by other storage vendors.

The combined NetApp and leading e-mail archival software solution is used by customers including Inmarsat, the world leader in global mobile satellite communications; and UZ Leuven, one of the largest services centers for healthcare in Belgium.

Highlight VeriTest report findings:

  • The NetApp solution is fast. VeriTest found a single-node FAS3050 with SATA storage to be 38 percent faster than a 16-node Centera G4 in baseline archival tests. Additionally, the single-node NearStore R200 was 48 percent faster than the 16-node Centera G4. There was also no impact on FAS3050 performance when running a discovery process for archiving.
  • The NetApp solution is reliable and offers superior data availability. VeriTest found that single-drive failure had a minimal impact on the FAS3050 archive performance. However, the Centera G4 ingestion rate dropped 22 percent relative to its baseline archive performance. In terms of pure speed, the FAS3050 was 80 percent faster than the Centera G4, and the NearStore R200 was 75 percent faster in a single-drive failure scenario. In a dual-drive failure scenario the FAS3050 was 2.24 times faster than a Centera G4.

"The findings in the VeriTest report demonstrate that NetApp storage provides enterprise customers with higher performing storage solutions for archive data than other large vendors in the market today," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Alliances at Network Appliance. "In addition, NetApp provides customers with the flexibility and robustness required to address their ever-changing archival needs. The simplified NetApp approach of a 'single-box archival solution' of primary and secondary storage packaged in the same unit for hosting all archival data, while locking it down with write-once, read many, or WORM, capability, is unmatched in the industry."
