NetApp Hosts the International Disk Drive Material Association (IDEMA) Technical Symposium

Sunnyvale, California - May 5, 2008 -- NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) will host the upcoming IDEMA Technical Symposium titled "Hard Disk and Solid State Drive Reliability-The Pursuit of Excellence." Dr. Jon Elerath, reliability engineer at NetApp and IDEMA chairman of the Reliability Committee, will host industry leaders at this one-day event at the NetApp headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, on May 15, 2008.

Storage customers consistently demand that new products possess reliability improvements to meet current and future requirements for data availability and integrity. Solid state drives are relatively new to the storage world, and the reliability of these devices is just now being understood. This IDEMA technical symposium will address hard disk drive (HDD) reliability; the physics, mathematics, and statistics of this assessment; HDD design for reliability; field performance experience of storage users; and the HDD production environment and supporting metrology to maximize yields and minimize reliability detractors.

Session: Storage Reliability: An Assessment of Field Performance
Title: The Physics, Mathematics, and Statistics of Reliability Assessment
In this session, Dr. Elerath will walk through several statistical analyses of field failure data, including the pros and cons of each, the effects of inadequate failure analyses (NTF and handling), and the impact of different operating rules.
Speaker:: Dr. Jon Elerath, reliability engineer at NetApp and IDEMA chairman of the Reliability Committee
Time:: 8:30-9:00 a.m. Pacific Time, May 15, 2008

Title: Why Disks Fail
As the scale and complexity of storage systems continue to increase, researchers have started to review the fundamental design principles and assumptions used to build them. In this presentation, we discuss why disk reliability is critical to storage system reliability and the fact that disks themselves are most likely not the component to fail in storage systems.
Speaker:: Arkady Kanevsky, member of Technical Staff, NetApp
Time:: 1:00-1:30 p.m. Pacific Time, May 15, 2008

Where:: NetApp Corporate Headquarters
