NetApp® SnapManager® for Microsoft Exchange Software Achieves Microsoft Simple SAN Designation for Microsoft Windows Server Backup/Quick Restore

Sunnyvale, Calif. - April 4, 2006 -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced that NetApp SnapManager for Exchange software achieved the Microsoft Simple SAN designation for Microsoft Windows Server Backup/Quick Restore category. The Simple SAN Component designation validates NetApp application recovery technology effectiveness and reaffirms the company's commitment to tightly integrating with Microsoft storage technologies and the Microsoft Windows Server platform. NetApp provides customers with a backup and recovery solution for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2 that increases data accessibility and availability to provide unmatched simplicity for backup, recovery and archiving processes. Achieving the Microsoft Simple SAN Component designation demonstrates to the market that NetApp and Microsoft are providing solutions for quick recovery of Exchange Server 2003 SP2.

"Microsoft is happy to announce that NetApp SnapManager for Exchange has achieved the Microsoft Simple SAN designation as a Windows Server Backup/Quick Restore Component," said Dr. Claude Lorenson, group product manager, Storage Technologies at Microsoft Corporation. "Microsoft is committed to providing application recovery solutions for our customers that work seamlessly on the Windows Server platform and the NetApp solution is a good example of this commitment."

NetApp SnapManager for Exchange, unlike other backup and quick recovery products, empowers customers to perform backups of Exchange Server databases without shutting down Exchange services, providing continuous uptime throughout the backup process. Customers can also benefit from executing full backups in seconds because the solution is based on NetApp Snapshot™ technology.

Additionally, NetApp SnapManager for Exchange software supports the Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) technology and helps Exchange Server administrators to rapidly restore data within minutes, with no assistance from server or storage administrators. SnapManager for Exchange also provides increased storage utilization to drive down storage costs.

Progress Energy, a Fortune 250 diversified energy company with more than 24,500 megawatts of generation capacity and $10 billion in annual revenue, uses NetApp SnapManager for Exchange. SnapManager for Exchange is Progress Energy's primary backup and recovery tool for Exchange Server data. Progress Energy backs up its entire Exchange environment three times a day, which minimizes potential downtime if an Exchange database restoration is required. Progress Energy also performs an offline database integrity check nightly to reinforce a solid backup nearline.

"SnapManager for Exchange helps Progress Energy reduce the time required for performing Exchange backups by 80%. Using a SnapManager for Exchange Snapshot, we have greatly reduced the amount of time it takes to perform backups of our Microsoft Exchange Server data," said Jarod Rodriguez, Infrastructure and Architecture Services, at Progress Energy. "SnapManager for Exchange also enables us to recover our Exchange data quickly and easily, minimizing unplanned downtime, which lets us focus on running our business and on our company's priorities."

"NetApp is committed to providing powerful and simple-to-use backup and recovery solutions for Microsoft Exchange Server and other Microsoft applications to our customers and partners," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Partners at Network Appliance. "Achieving the Microsoft Simple SAN Component designation for SnapManager for Exchange gives our customers an easy-to-use backup and recovery solution while maintaining high Exchange Server uptime performance."

SnapManager for Exchange is the first NetApp software solution to receive a Simple SAN designation. Using SnapManager for Exchange with NetApp iSCSI and Fibre Channel storage, customers are provided a powerful yet simple storage solution for their Exchange Server messaging environment.
