Architectural Firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Deploys Global Enterprise Storage Solution from Network Appliance
Sunnyvale, Calif. - August 25, 2003 --
Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of
enterprise network storage solutions, today announced that
architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has chosen
NetApp to build its enterprise network storage platform to simplify
its network storage, lower its storage TCO and deploy a disaster
recovery and business continuance solution. With more than 65 years
of architecture, engineering and planning projects in over 50
countries, including Jin Mao Tower in Shanghai, Lever House in New
York City, San Francisco International Airport and the Sears Tower
in Chicago, SOM needed a way to store, share and manage the
tremendous amount of digital design data produced by its architects
around the world.
To more efficiently store and manage the large amounts of data
generated by architectural drawings, SOM has deployed a NetApp
NearStore™ system, which provides a centralized information
store for remote disaster recovery and business continuance in
tandem with NetApp storage systems and SnapMirror®,
SnapRestore®, and DataFabric® Manager software in SOM's
London, New York, Chicago and San Francisco offices.
"NetApp has met and exceeded our expectations. We deployed the
NetApp solutions to simplify administration and save money, but we
also achieved business continuance, greater reliability and other
benefits in the bargain," said Henry King, CIO for SOM. "We can see
that we'll derive financial benefits even beyond the substantial
reduction in costs."
By consolidating its storage and reducing its server count by
nearly 40%, SOM has gained a total cost of ownership savings of
more than half a million dollars. The NetApp solution has also
enabled optimized storage resource utilization and streamlined
administration. SOM's global storage network is more stable, and
planned downtime has minimal impact on user productivity.
Network Appliance offers highly available, scalable and
cost-effective storage consolidation solutions that incorporate the
NetApp enterprise storage platform and the feature-rich
functionality of data and resource management software to deliver
storage with simplified backup and reduced recovery time as well as
the ability to add storage without downtime.
Founded in Chicago in 1936, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP has
undertaken more than 10,000 architecture, engineering, interior
design, urban design and planning projects in more than 50
countries. Throughout its history, SOM has been recognized with
more than 800 awards for quality and innovation, 125 of which have
been received in the past 10 years. In 1996 SOM received the
American Institute of Architects' Firm Award, recognizing the
distinguished design work of the firm as a whole. As the first
winner of this award when it was established in 1961, SOM is the
only firm to have received this prestigious honor twice. The firm
currently has offices in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, London,
Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Indianapolis and Sao
