McDATA and Network Appliance Extend Partnership To Deliver Unified Storage Networks

Broomfield, Colo. - July 14, 2003 -- McDATA® Corporation (Nasdaq: MCDTA/MCDT), the expert provider of multi-capable storage networking solutions, and Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of enterprise network storage solutions, today announced the two companies have partnered to deliver solutions to optimize networked storage investments for companies of all sizes. McDATA and NetApp now offer interoperable solutions that further enable the convergence of network attached storage (NAS) and storage area networks (SANs). These unified storage networks will provide centralized, secure and easy to manage consolidated storage implementations that provide significant cost savings by eliminating unnecessary duplication of resources and more efficient use of storage assets.

"The ability to converge NAS and SAN environments is a major priority to many customers. The interoperability work between McDATA and Network Appliance will allow companies to utilize existing infrastructure and equipment which will lower overall IT costs," said Randy Kerns, analyst and senior partner, Evaluator Group. "We believe McDATA and Network Appliance understand their customers' requirements and have wisely developed solutions to meet their needs. Businesses with mixed networked storage environments will benefit greatly from this partnership."

The initial results of the McDATA/NetApp partnership support interoperability between McDATA's full family of multi-capable storage networking products, and NetApp® FAS900 series and F800 series storage systems, along with NetApp NearStore™ nearline products. In addition, the partnership has also delivered the ability to back up data on NetApp storage systems through a McDATA storage area network to tape libraries or NearStore for disk-to-disk. Now customers have the ability to centralize their tape and disk-based backup for both SAN and NAS data, resulting in cost savings due to the elimination of duplicate backup environments, resources and management systems.

"McDATA's multi-capable storage networking solutions help companies reduce their management costs, provide growth-ready infrastructure flexibility and ensure data availability," said Mike Gustafson, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, McDATA. "Combine those benefits with the NetApp partnership to add value and drive cost savings through this joint solution and customers have compelling reasons to unify their storage networks."

SAN/NAS convergence is accomplished through the FAS900's ability to handle networked storage in SAN and/or NAS mode and its interoperability with McDATA's Intrepid™ 6000 Series Directors and Sphereon™ 3000 and 4000 Series Fabric Switches.

"Network Appliance pioneered unified storage with the introduction of our FAS900 systems in October of 2002, and we are pleased that partners such as McDATA and customers have embraced our approach so enthusiastically," said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance.
