AppIQ and Network Appliance Partner to Develop SNIA SMI-S Interface to Integrate SAN and NAS Management

Burlington, Mass. and Sunnyvale, Calif. - May 15, 2003 -- AppIQ™, the leader in the open management revolution in storage management software, and Network Appliance (Nasdaq: NTAP), a leading provider of enterprise network storage solutions, today announced that they are partnering to develop an open interface based on the Storage Networking Industry Association's (SNIA) Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) to unify SAN and NAS storage management at a lower cost of ownership. AppIQ Solution Suite will be the first to manage the Network Appliance™ unified storage platform through an SMI-S interface. AppIQ and Network Appliance are also teaming to drive the NAS implementation of the SMI-S.

"The efforts AppIQ and Network Appliance are making to propel the SMI-S are reflective of the overall industry support for this standard," said John Webster, senior analyst and cofounder, Data Mobility Group. "By integrating the management of NAS and SAN through the implementation of the SMI-S, customers have the freedom to utilize both technologies and manage both through a single console. This reduces the cost and complexity of their storage environments and in turn increases their ROI."

Network Appliance is a charter member of the CIMIQ Partner Program announced by AppIQ last fall, and AppIQ recently enrolled in Network Appliance's Advantage Developer Program. CIMIQ is a software development platform enabling accelerated deployment of standards-based solutions, specifically CIM (Common Information Model)/WBEM (Web-Based Enterprise Management)/SMI-S compliant products. The Advantage Developer Program distinctly targets the needs of developers by offering the tools and the developer support needed to successfully create NetApp® technology-enabled solutions.

"The synergy between Network Appliance and AppIQ allows us to quickly deliver tangible, low-cost management solutions to our customers," said Suresh Vasudevan, senior director of product management at Network Appliance. "By leveraging AppIQ's unique expertise in CIM-development, we are able to offer more powerful solutions to our mutual customers at a lower TCO."

Through this partnership, AppIQ and Network Appliance are leading the efforts to manage unified storage through the implementation of the SMI-S. AppIQ Solution Suite will provide native management support for the NetApp FAS900 unified storage platform that includes storage visualization, deployment, and provisioning. Today the SMI-S Version 1.0 is the target specification, but the two companies are also driving the NAS implementation of SMI-S Version 1.1.

"Just as Network Appliance is an innovator in the enterprise storage space, we consider ourselves an innovator in the storage management space," said Jim Geronaitis, director of strategic alliances at AppIQ. "As the leader in the open management revolution, we take standards seriously as the means to deliver the highest value to our customers. We're pleased to work with Network Appliance to extend our open management to unified SAN and NAS storage."
