Adaptec Announces IP Storage Networking Beta Program

Milpitas, CA - March 5, 2003 -- Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADPT), the global leader in IP Storage Networking, today announced a beta program for IP Storage Networking solutions built on the company's groundbreaking iSCSI technology. In conjunction with leading OEMs, Adaptec is working with a broad range of customers including Trimble, Sandia Labs and the University of Michigan.

The program includes Storage Area Network (SAN) deployments to support a broad set of applications including Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, CRM and ERP applications, databases and collaboration and messaging solutions on both Windows and Linux platforms. The installations include Adaptec iSCSI host bus adapters and leverage servers and storage systems from leading OEMs including Eurologic and Network Appliance.

"Adaptec is pleased to be working with industry leaders such as Network Appliance, Eurologic, Trimble, Sandia Labs and the University of Michigan to complete the first real-world deployments of IP storage networks," said Ram Jayam, vice president and general manager of Adaptec's Storage Networking Group. "The availability of Adaptec's iSCSI host bus adapters along with iSCSI storage systems from leading OEMs such as Network Appliance is a major milestone in the advent of the IP storage market."

Trimble, a leading innovator of Global Positioning System (GPS), optical and laser technologies, is deploying an iSCSI storage network incorporating a Network Appliance storage system and Adaptec iSCSI adapters to support storage pooling for both engineering and Microsoft Exchange.

"For Trimble, fast and reliable access to engineering data is critical to delivering successful products to our customers," said Bob Denis, chief information officer at Trimble. "Managing, protecting and scaling our storage resources using traditional in-server solutions is resource intensive and time-consuming. We're pleased to be working with Adaptec and Network Appliance to deploy iSCSI to support both our engineering and messaging infrastructure, and we look forward to the ability to more easily manage, allocate and protect our storage resources on an IP SAN."

Network Appliance recently announced its first iSCSI storage solution and is working closely with industry leaders including Adaptec on their initial customer deployments.

"iSCSI represents a chance to accelerate customers' evolution from direct-attach and internal storage to networked storage," said Phil Williams vice president of marketing for Network Appliance. "Solutions based on iSCSI help reduce connection costs, remove complexity from a variety of storage applications and enable enterprises to consolidate their storage infrastructures. Working closely with Adaptec will accelerate the delivery of truly open and interoperable storage networks."

Eurologic has been at the forefront of iSCSI development, with IP-SAN solutions that offer users the benefits of networked storage, while leveraging the ease of use and cost advantages of IP networks.

"Eurologic is pleased to be working with Adaptec to accelerate the adoption of this new generation of storage. We see IP based solutions as the ideal fit for the demand for cost effective storage solutions for mid-sized companies," said Mike Stolz, vice president of Sales and Marketing, Eurologic Systems. "The combination of Adaptec's full ASIC-based iSCSI adapters and Eurologic's family of IP-SAN solutions will allow users to enjoy the availability and scalability offered by shared storage configurations, as well as the large skill base and low cost infrastructure of existing IP based Ethernet networks."

Sandia National Laboratories develops science-based technologies for national security. The organization's data-intensive engineering and scientific work requires highly reliable, high-performance storage solutions.

"Fast, highly reliable access to data is mission critical for our work at Sandia," said Sandia spokesman Mike Janes. "We're pleased to be working with Adaptec in this beta program to deploy and test IP storage solutions that can support our efforts at Sandia."
