Egenera Inc. Delivers NAS-based Solution for Its BladeFrame System

Marlboro, MA - December 18, 2002 -- Egenera Inc., the leader in next-generation datacenter infrastructure, announced today that it has introduced a NAS (network attached storage)-only option for its award-winning BladeFrame™ system. This new feature, which extends BladeFrame storage support to encompass both SAN (storage area network) and NAS environments, is now commercially available as part of BladeFrame Release 2.1.

"With this capability, Egenera delivers the business benefits of our BladeFrame system-including improvements in total cost of ownership, application availability and market agility-to organizations using NAS or SAN, either for specific applications or across the enterprise," said Susan Davis, vice president of product marketing and management, Egenera. "With access to both NAS and SAN capabilities, BladeFrame customers have a tremendous opportunity to achieve server consolidation. At the same time, our software-based approach means that resources can be managed locally or by a centralized IT staff based on individual preferences, for the best of both worlds."

"NetApp enterprise customers demand infrastructures with better utilization and investment protection," noted Rich Clifton, VP of the SAN/iSAN Business Unit at Network Appliance. "We are pleased to work with Egenera in making a significant step forward by providing a solution with easily provisioned processing and flexible, easy-to-manage storage. By moving not only data but the application stack and operating system image to outboard storage, the BladeFrame creates a versatile pool of stateless, universal processing resources. The Network Appliance™ unified (FAS) storage platform and storage-management technologies act as a catalyst in this environment, while providing increased scalability, flexibility and ease of management."

The Egenera BladeFrame, with its Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture, assembles purpose-built hardware and virtualization software in a fully integrated computing platform that enables enterprise-class datacenters to achieve savings, optimize availability and drive market agility. The BladeFrame combines the reliability and manageability of a mainframe, the scalability of distributed computing and the price/performance of commodity components to deliver the only processing architecture to make Lintel viable for mission-critical applications. Leveraging the Red Hat® Linux® operating system, the BladeFrame creates a pool of up to 96 Intel® Xeon™ processors on 24 Egenera Processing Blade™ resources that are deployed entirely through Egenera PAN Manager™ software. Processing power can be dynamically increased, decreased and reallocated to support new applications or accommodate variable demand on existing applications without purchasing, installing or managing incremental equipment.
