Network Appliance™ DAFS Database Accelerator Available for Sybase® Adaptive Server® Enterprise

Sunnyvale, CA - April 3, 2002 -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of enterprise network storage solutions, and Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY), a leading e-Business infrastructure provider, today announced DAFS Database Accelerator availability for Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) 12.5 database environments. DAFS Database Accelerator technology, in combination with NetApp® enterprise storage, enhances application performance to deliver faster access to enterprise data, while significantly reducing management complexity in mission-critical database deployments.

NetApp DAFS Database Accelerator is the first DAFS-enabled storage solution to be ready for integration with Sybase database environments and marks another milestone in an ongoing relationship between Network Appliance and Sybase to develop advanced solutions that improve business application performance.

NetApp DAFS Database Accelerator uses virtual interface (VI) technology over a Gigabit Ethernet interconnect, enabling Network Appliance and Sybase enterprise customers to support larger workloads on existing hardware in high-performance database deployments. This solution enables Network Appliance to deliver enterprise storage systems that offer a scalable infrastructure, high performance, and low total cost of ownership (TCO) in large-scale Sybase ASE environments.

"Sybase and Network Appliance continue to deliver fully interoperable solutions for our customers that speed access to global enterprise data. By helping to reduce database server overhead, the combination of DAFS and Sybase ASE offers customers in Sun® Solaris™ environments a clear performance advantage," said Dr. Raj Nathan, senior vice president and general manager Sybase Enterprise Solutions Division. "Network Appliance DAFS-based storage platforms are the first DAFS solutions commercially available for Sybase ASE, offering enterprises seamless integration and reduced management complexity, delivering lower TCO."

"Enterprise companies require solutions that speed access to critical business data and improve employee productivity," said Ray Villeneuve, vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. "NetApp DAFS solutions allow customers to utilize highly scalable database storage solutions in conjunction with Sybase ASE, and be assured the solutions they are deploying integrate seamlessly. In today's performance-intensive environments, NetApp DAFS Database Accelerator is a key solution for success."

Prior to announcing the DAFS Database Accelerator, Network Appliance and Sybase jointly released audited Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC-C) results that set a new performance standard for real-world business environments. The results represent the first transaction processing benchmark test using the Direct Access File System (DAFS) protocol in a database environment, as well as the first published TPC-C result using advanced RAID-protected storage rather than JBOD or mirrored storage. The test also marks the first published result with a database residing on a full-function file system.

The benchmark results, conforming to the TPC-C guidelines, delivered the best price/performance for a UNIX®-based system and the best per-processor performance for a SPARC®-based system ever achieved. The TPC-C performance test yielded 112,286.46 transactions per minute (tpmC) at a cost of US $13.44 per tpmC. See for more details.
