VERITAS Software and Network Appliance Team to Deliver Proven Online Data Protection

Mountain View, CA and Sunnyvale, CA - March 20, 2002 -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of enterprise storage solutions, and VERITAS Software Corporation (NASDAQ: VRTS) today announced an advanced approach to enterprise data backup and recovery, allowing faster backup to disk and tape that reduces network overhead. This approach employs a two-tier data protection architecture utilizing VERITAS NetBackup software to consolidate backup from multiple storage systems to a Network Appliance NearStore R100 appliance before sending it to tape. Coupling these products allows customers to offload tape backup functions from the primary storage device to a centralized dedicated appliance, providing customers with improved storage performance and availability, simplified backup, and rapid data recovery.

"The combination of VERITAS NetBackup and Network Appliance NearStore R100 gives enterprise customers a robust and powerful data protection solution that reduces the impact of backups on ongoing business operations, and provides the ability to rapidly restore data," said Neal Ater, senior vice president, data protection group, VERITAS Software. "These products are tested for interoperability, offering time and cost savings by reducing management complexity and the threat of downtime."

"Network Appliance is working closely with VERITAS Software to deliver advanced, complementary solutions that ensure business continuance, but without adding unnecessary levels of complexity," said Mark Santora, senior vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. "Working closely with VERITAS ensures our products integrate effortlessly to meet the needs of enterprises today and tomorrow, and to safeguard the mission-critical data that keeps businesses running."

The NearStore R100 offers large storage capacities at a very attractive price point, making it well suited for enterprise applications such as backup consolidation and data recovery. Consolidating backup to NearStore simplifies the data archive management process by enabling customers to backup NetApp® filers and non-NetApp storage to a centralized repository before archiving to tape. NearStore R100 appliances provide customers with an easy-to-deploy and easy-to-manage solution that can seamlessly integrate with existing backup environments in global data infrastructures to improve overall performance.

VERITAS NetBackup is the industry's leading enterprise data protection solution providing centralized control from a single management interface. The multi-tier architecture of VERITAS NetBackup provides customers with fast, reliable, data-center strength backup and recovery that can protect environments that span terabytes to petabytes in size. Key features in VERITAS NetBackup include integrated storage area network (SAN) support, dynamic tape drive sharing, snapshot backup, server-free backup, disaster recovery support, and intuitive Java and Windows administrative interfaces.
