Analyst Firm Finds Network Appliance™ Storage Solutions for Microsoft® Exchange Can Provide Compelling Positive Return on Investment

Sunnyvale, Calif. - March 29, 2004 -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leading provider of enterprise network storage solutions, today announced a new Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) study commissioned from Forrester Consulting that estimates a sample organization using Network Appliance storage consolidation solutions for Microsoft Exchange has a risk-adjusted 136% return on investment (ROI) over a three-year period with a break even point (payback period) within 13 months for an organization performing storage consolidation in an Exchange environment. This amounts to a risk-adjusted cost savings of over $1.2 million in a three-year window.

"This TEI study continues to validate what many Windows® applications customers already know, that Network Appliance delivers highly scalable storage consolidation solutions and lower the total cost of ownership, " said Mark Santora, senior vice president of Marketing at Network Appliance. "We remain dedicated to delivering solutions that increase the value of technology and maintain higher availability of data throughout the lifecycle of its investment."

The study was based on in-depth interviews with five organizations using Network Appliance storage systems, NetApp® SnapManager® for Exchange software, Single Mailbox Recovery software, and network support and services. The study examines the estimated ROI for the sample organizations and presents the aggregate findings derived from the interview and analysis process as well as the firm's independent research. Financial results were calculated by using a three-year summary of the net present value, risk-adjusted costs and benefits for the sample organization, as well as ROI and payback period.

From this study, Forrester found the following benefits were achieved by using the Network Appliance storage consolidation solutions for Microsoft Exchange:

  • More frequent, near-instantaneous and nondisruptive backups causing no apparent performance degradation and reducing both planned and unplanned downtime
  • End-user business benefits from rapid restores, making data available sooner
  • Automated data management tasks with tools that are integrated into Exchange, enabling functions such as single mailbox recovery
  • Increased productivity as NetApp storage solutions provide a highly available and reliable infrastructure to keep Exchange up and running
  • NetApp storage management solutions for Exchange that support third-party antivirus software
  • More efficient storage and server utilization
