Manila: An Update on OpenStack's Shared File Services Program

Monday, May 18 at 2:00PM - 2:40PM, Room 109

This presentation will provide an overview of Manila, the OpenStack File Shares Service. Manila is a community-driven project that presents the management of file shares (e.g. NFS, CIFS) as a core service to OpenStack. Manila currently works with a variety of storage platforms, as well as a reference implementation based on a Linux NFS server.

FlexPod with Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 6

Tuesday, May 19 at 11:15AM - 11:55AM, Marketplace Expo Hall Theater

While enterprise customers are considering open source solutions such as OpenStack, many don't want to give up the level of support or integration they've come to depend on. They also don't want to deploy OpenStack on an infrastructure that is difficult to scale up or automate. So what's the solution? Deploying Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 6 on FlexPod provides a fully supported cloud platform that can scale.

Speakers:

  • Dave Cain, Technical Marketing Engineer for Cloud Converged Infrastructure, NetApp
  • Eric Railine, Technical Marketing Engineer for Integrated Infrastructure Services, NetApp
Cinder 102: Pouring a Solid Foundation for Block Storage Services

Tuesday, May 19 at 2:00PM - 2:40PM, Room 109

Cinder, at its core, provides basic provisioning and management of block storage volumes to users of OpenStack clouds. However, beyond basic volumes and snapshots, there is a lot of advanced capability for cloud administrators that can be leveraged to provide value added capability to end users, as well as for managing the lifecycle of volumes and storage subsystems.

Speaker:

  • Jeff Applewhite, Technical Marketing Engineer, NetApp
Because Data: Why does Enterprise Storage Matter for OpenStack?

Tuesday, May 19 at 4:40PM - 5:20PM, Room 221

Enterprise IT is constantly being challenged to react faster to business demands, a major factor in the Enterprise adoption of Cloud technologies.  As workloads are rapidly migrating into the cloud, there are a number of critical questions about a company’s data that must be addressed. Are we compliant? Is it protected? How can the data be moved? How much does it cost? And, even, where is it physically?

Until there is a plan in place to answer these and other questions,  deployment of OpenStack into production will remain challenged.

NetApp’s Sr. Director of OpenStack Cloud Solutions Jeff O’Nea moderates a panel of industry experts from Red Hat, SUSE, HP, and Intel as they discuss enterprise IT’s expectations for securing and managing their data and what the future holds for storage technology in the Private Cloud.

Speakers:

  • Jeff O'Neal, Sr. Director, Cloud Solutions Group , NetApp
  • Nick Barcet, Director of Product Management, RedHat
  • Pete Chadwick, Senior Product Manager of Cloud Infrastructure Solutions, SUSE
  • Anjaneya "Reddy" Chagam, Principal Engineer, Intel

Manila: Taking OpenStack Shared File Storage to the Telco Cloud

Wednesday, May 20 at 3:30PM - 4:10PM, Room 110

Manila is the shared file system service and an incubated OpenStack project since the Juno release. Manila allows tenants to manage shares (e.g., NFS exports), take snapshots, and adjust access rules - among other things.

In this talk, we will present our lessons learned during an evaluation of Manila for use in a Telco environment. Deutsche Telekom, NetApp, and SVA have established a joint qualification lab. The solution uses a fully automated open source deployment and testing framework that leverages OpenStack Tempest. Part of this presentation is validation of Manila's applicability for common use cases, its functionality, as well as the maturity of different backend implementations.

The Lean Cloud: Avoiding the Cloud Fat as your Apps Scale and Age

Thursday May 21 at 1:30PM - 2:10PM, Room 208/209 Theatre

Public cloud is a great option for deploying new applications quickly, especially when customer uptake is uncertain. But as metrics begin to level off, the economics of operating in a public cloud must be optimized.  The next phases of an application's lifecycle are then about control, scale and efficiency — and this is when an Enterprise begins to consider a Hybrid-cloud solution.

So, what are the considerations that should be addressed when making this decision? How do we maintain the agility afforded to us by public cloud technology?  How can OpenStack fulfill it’s destiny as the orchestrator of apps? Using the concept of Data Fabric, Val Bercovici will walk you though this natural evolution.

Speakers:

  • Val Bercovici, Cloud Czar, NetApp
