The University of Scranton
Going Global with Flash-enabled Classrooms
The University of Scranton is committed to providing students with opportunities to be immersed in learning in multicultural environments. As such, it is welcoming students from Africa, South America, and other regions using e-learning programs. The University is adopting a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) service mobile strategy to support learning and collaboration from anywhere at any time, as well as offering university-owned software free of charge to students and faculty. Integral to the success of these efforts is a high-performance virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).
To maintain a quality learning experience for students worldwide, the University needed a highly scalable storage system. Bottlenecks were already occurring in local computer labs, where students attend classes that use heavy-hitting statistical and mathematical applications. With many students connecting to these applications simultaneously at the start of classes, VDI boot storms caused latency peaks as high as 50ms.
To expand mobile-friendly content delivery solutions and provide anytime, anywhere access for educators and students, the University moved its VMware Horizon View VDI deployment to NetApp AFF8040 systems. At the same time, it deployed non-flash NetApp FAS8040 systems to host critical applications such as its Banner student information system, in a virtual environment. All controllers run the NetApp clustered Data ONTAP operating system for continuous operations to support students and staff. With the new solution in place, applications now launch faster and are more responsive, with virtual desktop login times decreasing by 50%.
Today, the ability to offer high-quality learning experiences is helping the University be more competitive and attract students worldwide. Its VDI deployment has been so successful that the University is considering moving its Oracle databases to NetApp All Flash FAS to boost performance for enterprise applications.
