LONDON - October 5, 2011 -
Pierre
Lang represents exclusive designer jewellery distributed over
individual direct sales. Projects on short notice, changing
customers and fluctuations in demand require a flexible IT
infrastructure and simple management. Replacing the existing SAN
storage, the requirements of the mid-sized enterprise were clear: a
flexible and scalable storage infrastructure, consolidation of the
Windows file services essential to the business, maximum data
security and the ability to react fast to new projects and
country-specific requests. After an extensive evaluation, the
company originating in Vienna, Austria, decided upon the deployment
of NetApp unified storage.
"NetApp unified storage ideally supports our
business model and meets the requirements of a mid-sized enterprise
such as ours", emphasizes Felix Losan, IT director at Pierre Lang
Europe Handelsgesellschaft mbH. "A short learning curve for the
system management allowed us to develop, test and realise our own
ideas rapidly."
Absolutely critical to business at Pierre
Lang are the file services, which are tightly linked to the
externally operated enterprise resource planning under SAP R/3. To
secure smooth sales processes in all 12 European countries with
Pierre Lang activities, the company decided to change to iSCSI and
shared storage based on a NetApp FAS2040A system. Two storage
controllers and the double parity of the NetApp RAID system provide
the absolute necessary resilience. The NetApp Snapshot technology
prevents against data loss which could cause high financial damage
due to the direct sales model. Several thousand jewellery
consultants in Europe send their orders by fax or Web. This
requires flexible and scalable data storage that can be adapted
according to the order and sales campaigns which creates a lot of
data.
"NetApp shared storage consolidates all data
on a single platform," explains Felix Losan, "and is flexible
enough to let us define and provide storage on demand."
The company's IT infrastructure team of four,
values above all the scalability and the simple management of the
new storage infrastructure. Today, high data traffic and endless
small projects don't cause sleepless nights. The team is looking
forward to new challenges: be it the greatly discussed
introduction of corporate email addresses for the Pierre Lang
consultants or further business expansions in Europe. Felix Losan
is convinced: "Whatever the future business requirements may be,
the versatility of the NetApp storage will help us to meet
them."
