Judging criteria for the awards program.

A third-party panel of judges will review and score the nominations by category using a 10-point rating system, with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. The focus of the judging will be on two areas: business impact and innovation. Points awarded by all the judges will be tallied for a grand total that will determine the winners. The judges will assign points based on the following criteria:

  • Business impact: Did productivity increase? Was the business process enhanced? Did the nominee overcome a business challenge by deploying NetApp® products? Did this result in a new best practice? Were operations streamlined?
  • Business results: Were significant, measurable business benefits achieved?
  • Innovation: Was the implementation innovative, or did something innovative result from implementing NetApp solutions?

2014 NetApp Innovation Award Judges

Bill Barnett

William Barnett is the Thomas M. Siebel Professor of Business Leadership, Strategy, and Organizations at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. After receiving his PhD in Business Adminstration from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988, Barnett was an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison School of Business. In 1991, Barnett came to the Stanford Business School as an Assistant Professor. He became an Associate Professor in 1994 and received tenure in 1996, and has been a full professor since 2001. Barnett has also twice been a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and is a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University. Barnett serves as associate editor or editorial board member for several academic journals.

Rich Karlgaard

Rich Karlgaard is the publisher of Forbes magazine, where he writes a biweekly column called Innovation Rules. He is also a regular panelist on cable news' popular business show, Forbes on FOX (with an average viewership of 1.2 million households per show in 2012), and frequent guest analyst on CNBC's The Kudlow Report. Karlgaard’s 2004 book, Life 2.0, was a Wall Street Journal business bestseller. Karlgaard is also an entrepreneur, an active angel investor, and sits on three outside boards. For co-founding Silicon Valley's largest public affairs organization, the 6,500-member Churchill Club, Karlgaard is a past Northern California winner of Ernst & Young's prestigious "Entrepreneur of the Year Award." Karlgaard earned a B.A. from Stanford University. He lectures up to 50 to 60 times a year on the innovation economy.

John T. McArthur

John McArthur is President of Walden Technology Partners, Inc., where he provides strategic consulting to senior IT-industry executives on technology, partnerships, acquisitions, executive team selection, and market development. He also serves as an independent director and board advisor for several early-stage information technology companies.

Prior to forming Walden, McArthur was Group Vice President and General Manager for Information Infrastructure and Enabling Technologies at IDC, a leading global supplier of IT market research. While at IDC, he became an internationally recognized speaker on storage and storage management trends and was a featured speaker at end-user, investor, trade-organization, and sales-training events.

Prior to IDC, McArthur managed a team of Information Technology procurement specialists, as an officer at State Street Boston Corporation, a leading global financial services company.

James E. Henderson

James Henderson is Professor of Strategy and Management Team Member Responsible for Programs and Innovation at IMD, a leading global business school based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Professor Henderson helps companies achieve and sustain their competitive advantage either at a business unit, corporate or global level through directing custom specific executive programs, facilitating strategy workshops, or teaching MBAs and executives. While at IMD (and previously at Babson College), he has designed, delivered and/or directed programs for a number of companies in a variety of different industries including healthcare: , high technology, consumer products, and economic development agencies.

His main research interest concerns developing and implementing strategy under uncertainty. Specific topics include investment timing, corporate entrepreneurship and strategic partnerships. Professor Henderson has published several important articles and papers on investment timing, strategic partnerships, and corporate entrepreneurship and has developed over 35 published IMD, INSEAD and Babson cases. Professor Henderson sits on the Editorial Board of the Strategic Management Journal. He has also co-authored two books, Restructuring Strategy in 2005 and Global Industrial Trends, in 2009.
