IBM DB2 for UNIX: Backup and Recovery Using NetApp Technologies

This technical report describes how to use the NetApp storage system’s Snapshot™ and SnapRestore® features to back up and restore a DB2 database in UNIX® environments and how to meet the challenges posed by shrinking backup and recovery windows for a mission-critical application. Regardless of the size of the database or the level of activity on the NetApp storage system, a Snapshot copy takes only a few seconds to create. The SnapRestore feature dramatically improves the system availability by providing the ability to recover in minutes, instead of hours or days.

IBM offers an array of virtualization technologies that enable users to improve the utilization of their information-technology resources. One of those technologies is called IBM® Live Partition Mobility (LPM). This technology enables the movement of servers from one physical system to a second physical system without shutting down the server. Using this technology, IBM DB2® server installations are able to move a database server from one physical system to another while it processes transactions.

The NetApp Performance Acceleration Module in File Services Workloads

NetApp submitted three results for SPECsfs2008 over NFS, each of which was for the FAS3140 storage system. The first submission is based on a FAS3140 controller with 16 disk shelves of 15,000 RPM Fibre Channel drives, totaling 224 disk drives. In the next configuration we used the same drive types but added a Performance Acceleration Module to the solution, enabling the reduction of half the drives (to 112 disks). Also, a configuration with 8 disk shelves of 112 SATA disk drives was submitted. Each of the configurations showed very similar performance characteristics in the results, demonstrating the ability of PAM to provide acceleration while reducing required drive counts.
