Parallel Network File System Configuration and Best Practices for Data ONTAP 8.1 Cluster-Mode

Data managers in information-intensive scientific industries such as petroleum and gas exploration and production (E&P) understand the challenges that their rapidly growing datastores pose. Poor access to the high-quality, complete data they need to make informed decisions can cost millions of dollars. Many E&P geoscientists spend far too much of their time identifying, locating, and obtaining data they need for their mission-critical analyses. This paper examines these challenges and then explores technology advances that now enable disk-based archiving to complement tape-based solutions. In doing so it helps address these challenges. The paper then examines the range of solutions from NetApp and Interica that enable E&P companies to leverage these advances. Finally, it summarizes the potential benefits of this approach.
