Digital Sense chooses NetApp for Storage as a Service and Cloud offerings

Leading IT hosting organisation implements NetApp solution to deliver enterprise level cloud services from local datacentres

Digital Sense, a leading organisationspecialising in providing world-class hosting infrastructure, is now able to offer a new range of enterprise level solutions to customers through the implementation of a NetApp platform provided by systems integration company, FLEXdata. After a competitive bid, Digital Sense chose NetApp due to the agility and scalability that its solutions can provide, allowing storage capacity to grow as the business does.

Since opening the doors of its Brisbane based datacentre in 2008, Digital Sense has seen a shift in businesses needs relating to cloud services, particularly at the enterprise level, and needed to update its offerings to better service its customers. Previously, Digital Sense’s storage platform was based on a traditional scale-up approach, meaning that it would exhaust its storage to the limit and then need to purchase a new system. On the newly introduced NetApp platform, Digital Sense is able to seamlessly and efficiently add storage to the environment when it is needed, improving performance and agility across the business.

As a service provider, it is of the utmost importance that Digital Sense has continuous and reliable access to its data, with nondisruptive operations and seamless scalability. To address these specific needs, Digital Sense selected a NetApp solution that comprises two NetApp FAS3220 units running clustered Data ONTAP 8.2, providing unprecedented flash support and up to 1.4PB of data storage.

“Digital Sense came to us looking to enhance its mission critical enterprise environment in order to compete with the growing number of cloud service providers in Australia,” said Troy Coker, general manager, FLEXdata solutions. “The integrated solution that NetApp can offer was a perfect match to firstly meet Digital Sense’s needs, but that can also maximise ROI from the IT infrastructure.”

“Our previous system lacked the scalability that Digital Sense was after,” said Michael Tran, CTO Digital Sense. “We are committed to providing our customers with high level solutions, which at times produce unpredictable amounts of data. We were ultimately looking to upgrade to a platform that could grow as our customer's business did.”

“NetApp was the only vendor that could meet our brief, which was to provide highly-competitive, enterprise-grade cloud services that could be distributed across multiple datacentres throughout Brisbane,” continued Tran. “Customers will save up to 80% through the aggressive and competitive large-scale cloud storage service that Digital Sense is now capable of providing.”

“We have also been able to save up to eight hours a week on storage and infrastructure maintenance through the NetApp Auto-Support and automation work flow toolsets. Since deployment, Digital Sense has already reduced its storage footprint by 38%, with this number set to grow as we make the full transition to the NetApp platform over the coming three months,” concluded Tran.

“NetApp is committed to solving our customers needs through implementing agile, efficient and flexible storage solutions,” said Steve Manley, managing director, NetApp Australia and New Zealand. “Through the combination of NetApp hardware and software, we were able to meet the requirements of Digital Sense and provide them with the enterprise cloud platform they were after. In a very competitive cloud service market, it’s essential that providers have the capabilities to offer high-level solutions that can be tailored to suit individuals’ needs. Digital Sense is now positioned to meet the growing demands of its customers now and into the future, “ concluded Manley.
